The mini-series “Flawesome” is about my journey finding the strengths in my personal flaws. I used to have self-confidence issues and cared too much about what other people thought of me. Even though people’s words have meaning, I am no longer letting other’s opinions influence what I think of myself. By recontextualizing the meanings of the negative things that have been said to me, I am making them positive and embracing who I am.
The flaws I have chosen to represent are: sensitive, shopaholic, unhealthy, and too much makeup. All of these things have been said to me repeatedly throughout my life in a negative context, but I don’t see those traits as bad so I wanted to glamorize them and use them to give myself confidence. I demonstrated that by using props like taco bell sauce packets as a necklace for unhealthy and using glitter in my tears for sensitive. Other people may say eating fast food is unhealthy but I look at it as a way of being able to feed myself with food I can afford and enjoy. Wearing “too much” makeup may look like I am trying too hard or being fake, but I use makeup as a way to express myself and to feel confident. Some may say I am a shopaholic, but in reality, I just like to treat myself with the money I earn from working hard. And yes, I may be “sensitive” but I at least I know I am vulnerable and in touch with my emotions.
I am hoping that viewers will consider what words they use towards others and also, if they are struggling with confidence issues, they can see their “bad traits” as positive ones that make them the unique individuals they are. I believe that being normal is boring so I won’t try to fit in anymore. Everyone should embrace their weirdness and be kind to each other regardless of our differences.
