The Fallen is an image of a 3D character model in armor set in a slightly darkened forested area with a pile of skulls. The models were created using Zbrush and Cinema 4D. The Fallen was inspired by Russian artist Vasily V. Vereshchagin’s The Apotheosis of War (1871) that depicts a pile of skulls in a desolate environment with crows circling and scavenging. The man in this work is a weathered warrior standing among those who fell before him and reflecting on his life in war. The gritty and damaged armor reflects the scores of battles that have defined his life. The warrior is returning to the site of his most deadly battle to memorialize the fallen comrades who have now turned to dust. As he passes through the skulls, the once unique personality and individuality of each soldier has become indistinguishable. Before the war, the character was young and ignorant about war, but now this place is a reminder to him of the uselessness of war and of fallen friends.
