Human-Centered Design

Having grown up passionate about skateboarding it always seemed fitting to incorporate skating into my professional career. As an Human Centered Designer my question was, how would I explore skating in a way that further progresses the sport while peaking public interest? The answer I’m exploring today is the design of a public area that encourages and supports the use of skateboards and common pedestrians.

The goal of the project is to break the perceived barrier that exists between skateboarding and the public by creating an environment that encourages use by both parties. This goal is achieved by designing separate but, easily navigated layouts for both the skating and non-skating public. The layouts both reflect different design properties due to the function of the space and how it will be used.

The skateboarding portion of the area will be designed with the intent of creating a space that is both beautiful for the public, and affective for skateboarding. This area is specifically meant for skateboarding but was also created to spike appeal to the non-skating public. Using Isamu Noguchi and Eduard Wallnofer Platz as inspiration I intend to use interesting, organic forms to create visual appeal for the spectator along with interesting features to skate.
