Human-Centered Design

Music is an enormous part of culture, entertainment and history in the human race. The rapid growth of technology is constantly changing the way we listen to music and how it is made. From the gramophone to digital streaming of music; several things have remained consistent, we strive to be able to listen to our favorite music whether to tone out the outside world or to share it alongside friends and family.

Playlist is a headphone design that improves upon some of the pain points of over the ear designs such as discomfort with glasses, “headphone hair,” fragile joints, and the inability to easily allow someone else to listen in easily. Playlist has accomplished these goals through diligent research of material and process exploration to create a pair of headphones that remain comfortable in multiple configurations while considering for the full range of potential users and situations the headphones could be used. The changes in form involve reducing the number of joints and increasing the range of motion of the headphones through a large ball joint built into the earpiece of the headphones. Alongside this free range of motion fixing the problems of poor joint structure, the headphone band is curved to rest comfortably along the back of the user’s neck after the headband is rotated off the top of the users’ head via the ball joint to accommodate helmets and other personal accessories. For people with glasses or needing to be able to hear at a moment’s notice, a cutout on the side of each earmuff, relieves pressure to prevent pain next to a person’s temples over extended periods of use. Alongside the adjustments to personal comfort, the outside of the headphones are not just a decorative piece but also used in part of a seamless transition from headphones to portable loudspeakers. Playlist has one final aspect of user customization: Magnetic plates that include a variety of personal identities, decals supporting your favorite team, entertainment or hobbies. Similar to how people will decorate their computer, these plates are highly customizable as sometimes just one thing doesn't describe you well enough.
