Students taking part in an art review

Art Review Advice

AD 303: Individual Art Review is an essential benchmark for students within Art & Design programs at the junior level. Enrollment in the class is based on students’ portfolio development, meeting the course prerequisites, and confirmation by their Art & Design Faculty Mentor. The 303 Review process is grounded in a student’s detailed, introspective assessment of their work in both oral and written formats. The course culminates with students demonstrating their ability to form judgments and defend questions about their portfolio and creative practice before a formal faculty panel.

Throughout Individual Art Review, the Art & Design Faculty Mentor will work closely with students to foster their portfolio’s development and revision, provide guidance and input for the written statement, and offer advice and feedback towards effectively discussing the work in a public forum.

AD 499: Senior Capstone is typically taken during the last semester of a student’s progression through the Art & Design curriculum. The course culminates with a public exhibition of the student’s capstone project in the DeVos Art Museum. An equally critical aspect of AD 499 is providing pre-professional advice to leverage upon graduation including: marketing & self-promotion, contracts & negotiation, starting a business, taxes & finances, copyright & ethics, residency & relocation, and grant writing.

When planning your academic schedule, please stay in regular communication with your Art & Design Faculty Mentor, as they can advise on the best timing for both classes.
