Welcome to The DeVos Art Museum

The DeVos Art Museum opened in February of 2005 after the completion of its new building designed by HGA Architects. The museum is part of the School of Art and Design at Northern Michigan University in Marquette and also serves as a regional art museum for the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The museum has been endowed by a generous grant from the DeVos Foundation of Grand Rapids.

The DeVos Art Museum grew directly out of Lee Hall Gallery, which was established in 1975 to serve the Art & Design Department at NMU as a departmental gallery. The role of the gallery grew to not only showing student and faculty work, but also to hosting national exhibitions and establishing a growing permanent art collection. A Docent program was developed and an out side sculpture walk was created. In 1995 Lee Hall Gallery gained art museum status and became known as the University Art Museum.

Now the DeVos Art Museum has expanded its role at the university and in the community to an even higher level. Due to the newly established endowment and a much larger contemporary gallery space, the museum is able to curate and host bigger and better exhibitions and bring in nationally and internationally recognized artists. There is also a second beautiful gallery space to show parts of the permanent art collection on a revolving basis.

The Friends of DeVos Art Museum is a membership organization that raises funds, hosts special events, and seeks new acquisitions for the permanent collection. Melissa Matuscak is the Director and Curator of the museum.
