CHOOSEN ARTISTS

With over fifty artists competing for three spots, the jurors had a difficult task. Each selected artist was on at least two of the three jurors' top ten list. The jurors created a small exhibition that highlights different approaches, media, and concepts. Thank you to Rachel Fugate, Melissa Matuscak, and Whitney Warstler for jurying and for helping us celebrate artists living and working in the Upper Peninsula.

Originating from lower Michigan, Kaelyn Wright moved to Marquette to pursue a bachelor's degree in cultural anthropology. Now a Marquette local, she works as the manager of Velodrome Coffee Company. She spends her free time outdoors, where she often finds inspiration, roping her friends into spontaneous photoshoots. Kaelyn's work explores the solitary moments of limbo and empty places.

Catherine Benda grew up in Detroit, Michigan, and has a BFA in painting and drawing from Central Michigan University. She currently resides in Marquette, Michigan, after spending 40 living in the Keweenaw on the shores of Lake Superior. Benda's paintings are influenced by nature, the landscape, the lake, and the human connections to them. She strives to uncover the dynamics of nature, which sometimes are positive, subtle, and suggestive and, at other times, are intense, direct, and overwhelming. Benda's paintings and collaborative art projects have been on display regionally and nationally. In 2019, Benda earned the Bruce and Allie Kotila Award at the 32nd Northern National Exhibit sponsored by the Nicolet Art Gallery in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and a first-place award at the Northern Exposure Exhibit at the Bonifas Art Center.

Emilee Covers is originally from a Little suburb right outside Chicago but currently resides here in Marquette, MI, junior status, as a Graphic Design major at Northern Michigan University. Although she is strictly under the umbrella of graphic art, she likes to dabble in several other mediums, including painting. Covers hopes to inspire other artists to venture out into other mediums and expand their minds to find a new passion.
