“Study of design in relation to visual perception and communication.”
Visual Structures is the second course in the foundations sequence and the course that refines the understanding of the visual structures vocabulary. The emphasis of the course is on the understanding and application of visual structures as a foundation for future efforts in art and design. The course isolates principles and conventions common to visual imagery such as color, organization, and depth. While the basis for AD 160: Physical Structures comes from physics, the basis for AD 175: Visual Structures comes from psychology and the study of visual perception. It is possible to teach AD 175: Visual Structures as a studio course, as a lecture course, or as a hybrid studio-lecture course.
