Description

In understanding the relationships of hue, saturation, and brightness, a series color studies would be completed focusing on color relationships. Each study would include two side-by-side compositions in which the same figure color appears different in each of the respective grounds. Variations: (1) One color figure appears to be two distinct colors on the relative grounds using only analogous colors; (2) One color figure appears to be two distinct colors on the relative grounds using any color; (3) One color figure appears to be two distinct colors on the relative grounds using complimentary colors for the ground; (4) Two distinct figure colors appear to be the same color within the relative grounds.

Materials

Colored paper OR paper/paint OR computer/printer; Xacto knife, adhesive, paper

Physical processes

1. Create two rectangles side by side, each 4” wide x 6” high. The color of the two rectangles is described above. The two rectangles are the ground for the project.
2. Create two smaller rectangles, approximately 1” square, centered on each of the two larger grounds. The color of the two smaller rectangles is described above.
3. For verification, it is easier if the smaller rectangles are actually holes in the material of the grounds and the color is continued beneath the grounds. In verification, the grounds may be lifted to see the continuous color strip beneath.

Critique approach

The final project should be assembled into a folder or booklet for submission. Critique is individual between faculty and student.
