Frequently Asked Questions
For Prospective Sculpture Students
I am an Art and Design major but not sure of declaring my area of concentration as Sculpture because I have little experience to support this decision. What should I do?
Take and entry-level course and see if you are as interested and enthusiastic as you expected to be. Sculpture is a unique concentration where a broad exposure to many different materials and processes is necessary. As you discuss your interests with your advisor, they will direct you to specific courses that will support your individual needs.
Do I need to have my own tools for each course offering?
NO. If you did it would be very expensive. Tools are provided for students during class and outside of class. The studios are open at least 80 hours a week outside our class time. Tools can be checked out for an hour or all day from the office conveniently located by the sculpture studio.
What jobs will I locate in my field upon graduating with a sculpture concentration?
We stress the importance of acquiring diverse skills throughout your program of study. These are the tools that will get you entry-level jobs in welding, foundry, fabrication and construction. Many students focus their studio production upon marketable objects sold at art fairs, gift shops and galleries.
We encourage students to learn what you need to know to do what you want to do. You have four years of undergraduate study to acquire skill, attitude and experience you need to succeed.
What is the emphasis in sculpture: welding, foundry, blacksmithing, or carving?
Students are encouraged to take diverse studio courses to obtain a broad understanding of Art Production. Each student is a unique entity with specific interests and strengths. No two students have gone through the program the same way.
We emphasize finding your interests and building a program of study to support them.
On average, how many sculpture majors are in the program?
We have a mix of metal and sculpture majors in my upper-level class averaging around 15 students each semester. It is a great student-to-teacher ratio with plenty of time for individual conference.
What is sculpture?
Sculpture is an idea that identifies a given space.
