Support for the School of Art and Design
The School of Art and Design at Northern Michigan University has become one of the largest programs in the region with over 700 majors enrolled for the fall 2008 semester. As we have grown, our program offerings and facilities have expanded to attempt to meet the demands of new curriculums that require state-of-the-art technology as well as maintaining our traditional studio concentrations with up-to-date, professional equipment and services. With the school assuming a national profile, we have also encouraged our students to pursue juried competitions at all levels from regional to international (See RECENT NEWS). In addition, we have promoted student participation in professional organizations and attendance at national conferences where they have been exposed to current and future practices within their disciplines. These experiences for students would not be possible without the continued support of our alumni and friends who provide us with the additional funds to make these opportunities a reality.
However, as you are probably aware, the State of Michigan continues to experience an economic downturn that has significantly impacted higher education and reduced our ability to provide some of the experiences for students we have illustrated above. A donation to the School of Art and Design Foundation would allow us to continue these activities that prepare the next generation of artists, designers and educators for the challenges they will face in competing in a global environment. A number of student/faculty activities that have recently been funded by donations to the school include:
- Assistance for transportation costs for a senior trip to museums, galleries and studios in Minneapolis.
- Assistance for transportation cost for a student to attend a conference on global warming in Washington DC.
- A purchase of materials for the printmaking program that included paper, inks and equipment.
- Assistance for transportation costs for students to attend the Industrial Designers Society of America conference in Chicago.
- Assistance for the purchase of materials for a student experimenting with nontraditional methods of furniture construction.
- Assistance for the purchase of a large format digital camera and tripod for the photography program.
- Assistance for transportation costs for students to attend to the International Contemporary Furniture Fare in New York.
- Awards for Outstanding Graduating Senior and Best of Show Award for the senior exhibitions.
