The DeVos Museum Building
The museum's new building was designed by Hammel, Green, and Abrahamson Architects in a neo-modernist style, using RhineZinc from Germany for the outside structure and windows along the top of the building for natural lighting. The spaces were designed to be open and flexible for all medias and types of exhibitions; from the Senior Show each semester, local artists, and artists brought in from around the world. The new space will also be able to accommodate host artists talks and workshops, plus an interactive video artist series that will enable audiences at Northern Michigan University to communicate with other artists anywhere in the world.
Thanks to the DeVos Foundation of Grand Rapids, Michigan, the Devos Art Musuem has a one million dollar endowment specifically for museum programming, bringing new and exciting opportunities to the Northern Michigan University campus for all the students and community to enjoy. A new outdoor concert area is located next to the new building so that everyone may enjoy the new interior and exterior of the museum, located a the end of Seventh Street on NMU's campus. The museum is part of the new addition to the Art and Design Building so that all the art offices, classrooms, and studios are unified together in one long building.
The Docent Education Program will continue to give gallery tours and art projects for public school students and other groups. To schedule a tour of the art museum for your group call 906-227-2194.
